Sgraffito Jug
Similar in shape and size to our earthenware jug, these jugs are decorated with a method called sgraffito. The jug is made from dark clay, then coated with slip, a liquid clay, usually in a lighter color. A design is carved onto the jug and when the piece is glazed and fired the decorative carvings appear on the surface. Handmade by a member of our Interpretative Artisans Program in the Crafts Center here at Plimoth Patuxet, each is slightly different. Approximately 6 1/2" tall and 5" in diameter at its widest point (not including handle). Sgraffito designs vary with each piece; please allow us to choose for you.
