Plymouth Nautical Flag Doorknob Hanger
Inspired by her love of boating and everything nautical, Pamela Tomlin of Ipswich, MA, hand-crafts and paints these wooden door hangers to display custom messages using nautical flags. This doorknob hanger spells out PLYMOUTH and comes packaged in a cello bag with a ribbon, ready for gifting.
The nautical alphabet’s development began in the 18th century by British, French and American seamen. Flags, representing letters, were strung together to make words or code signals and hauled up the mast. This communication system also included pennants to represent numbers. Today, nautical flags and pennants are used for colorful ceremonial displays by sea going vessels on special occasions.
